Don’t be Afraid of the Language Barrier!言語の壁はこわくない！I was worried about whether I would be able to speak with others in English during my time in Australia. I got nervous when the flight attendant asked me something in English, and I had to ask my friend for help. When I first met my host family, I couldn’t answer them in English or talk with them, but I was able to start to connect with them when we went sightseeing the next day in Adelaide. After that, I was able to have simple conversations with them in English. At first, you might be nervous because of the language barrier and dierent customs, but I think that you can connect with your host family by living under the same roof for a number of days. My time with my host family was very fulfilling. ey took me many places after school and on holidays. At rst, I thought that I had to be polite to them, but my host family was very friendly so I had a great time. e classes at 　オーストラリアの語学研修に行ってまず最初やはり英語で会話をできるか心配だった。オーストラリアに行く飛行機内でＣＡに英語で聞かれた時は緊張してしまい、友達に助けを求めてしまったりもした。オーストラリアに着き、初めてホストファミリーと会って話した時は英語で返事を返すこともできず会話すらままならない状態だったが、次の日の休日にホストファミリーとアデレードの街に行きいろいろな所に連れて行ってもらい、それをきっかけに少し仲良くなることができた。それからは簡単な英語ではあったが、会話をすることができるようになっていた。最初は言語の壁や国の風習の違いなどがあるから緊張するかもしれないが、数日間同じ屋根の下で暮らすだけで言語の壁があってもつながることができるのだと思った。ホストファミリーとの生活は、とても充実したものだった。学校が終わった後や休日にはいろいろな所に連れて行ってくれた。最初は気をつけて行動しないとなどと思っていたが、ホストファミリーが積極的に関わっand to ride street cars for free. I thought that the public transportation system there was excellent.The stores which sold food in the shopping malls were especially interesting to me. There are stores which sell food in every country, and they are a good place to compare cultures. What surprised me most was how big everything was. e biggest box of cereal contained 805 grams of cereal, which is unimaginable in Japan. Australians do not shop for food as often as we do in Japan. As a result, the products and carts are big, they use their cars when they shop, and they buy food in large quantities.It was a great experience to experience new things and to learn about another culture. It is important to talk with one’s host family in order to get to know them. Students from Chuo should do this more.カードを車内の機械と改札に通すことで支払いをするシステムが導入されており、乗降車に時間をとられることがありませんでした。また、バスでもメトロカードを使うことができ、アデレードの中心街には無料で乗れる路面電車が走っていて、公共交通機関の充実の差がよく分かりました。　ショッピングモールの食料品売り場は特に興味深かったです。総合的に食べ物を売る店というのは基本的にどこの国にもあるものなので、文化を比較するにはよい参考になる場所でした。とにかく思ったのは、何もかもが大きいということです。売っていたシリアルの一番大きいものは805ｇ入りで、日本では考えられないサイズでした。これには、オーストラリアの人々が私たちほど頻繁に買い物をしないということが挙げられます。そのため、もちろん商品もショッピングカートも大きくなり、買い物には車が使われ、一度に大量の買い物をするに至るのです。　ほんの少しの間でしたが、異国の地で普段ではできない体験をし、自分たちとは違う文化に触れることができたのはとても良い経験でした。少なからず、これからの人生に生きてくるものがあると思います。　最後に、ホストファミリーと打ち解けるのに大切なことは、やはり話すことでした。どんな些細なきっかけも大事にしてください。２年Z1組　石川　樂Gaku Ishikawa : Studentグローバルリーダー育成研修EXCELSIOR vol.18108
