News&Topicsthis day were able to control events on the second day and to win the prizes.On day1, the 43 countries formed 7 groups. It was like a power struggle in ancient China. On day 2, the 7 groups turned into only 2 groups. My job was to compare and summarize what other groups and my group were saying, and to go to other groups and give them my summary. I could not understand what was so fun about the mock UN on day 1, but I nally got it on day 2. Next, one of the ambassadors became arrogant and tried to pass a proposed resolution. In response, other countries which had allied themselves with that country broke away. As a result, not only did the student not become the leader, but the proposal was also rejected. I think that this is not just something that happens at mock UNs, but something which could happen or does happen in the real world. It is difcult to strike a balance between pushing for national self-interest and forming a consensus.The mock UN made me realize many things.The biggest thing concerns “English ability”. Many of the ambassadors had passed level 1 of Japan’s English test “Eiken”. I wondered if they were really high school students like me, and why they were so much better at English than me. I, in contrast, have only passed level pre-2 of this test. I thought about this and came to the conclusion that my English level is just lower than theirs.In addition, the gap between students from Tokyo and those from smaller cities in Japan was obvious. There were only 3 schools at the event from the Tohoku region. I think that more than half of the schools there are in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Almost all of the schools that won prizes were schools in Tokyo. This gap between regions continues to grow.I hope that students after me will overcome Tokyo’s dominance and win more prizes in the competition. I also want them to go to New York and do their best.Finally, I would like to thank my teachers for supporting me, all of the other students, our chaperone, Mr.Homma and everyone else involved. I am also obligated to Mr. Uchimura, for giving me guidance at the model UN. Thank you.のグループへ赴いて発言の内容をメモし伝達することであった。1日目は個人的に模擬国連の楽しさが理解できなかったが、2日目でやっと理解した。 ここでとある大使が、自国が盟主となって決議案を提出しようという傲慢な態度を取った。そうしたところ、その国と協力関係にあった国々が次々と離反。結局、盟主となるどころか決議案の提出さえ叶わなかった。この出来事は、模擬国連の偶然の産物のみならず、リアルな国際社会でも起こり得る、もしくは起こっているのではないかと推測する。自国が目立ちたいという欲望と、コンセンサスとのバランスをとることの難しさを実感した。 模擬国連は、私に多くのものを気づかせてくれた。そして多くのものを、築かせてくれた。 その最たるものは、「英語力」ではないかと思う。英検1級を取得済の大使は、かなり多くいた。本当に同じ高校生なのだろうか。何か怪しい薬でも飲んでいるのではないか。この差は何なのか。そう懐疑的にならずにはいられなかった。対して私は準2級。結局、自分のレベルが低いだけなのだと理解した。 また、都市と地方の参加校の差も歴然としていた。東北地方は3校のみ。半分以上が東京大都市圏からの選出だったのではないかと思う。入賞もほぼ、そこからだった。格差は増す一方である。 これから参加する後輩のみんなには、何年かかってもよいから、関東という牙城を切り崩し、入賞してほしいと思う。そして、ニューヨークで、頑張ってきてほしい。 最後に、私を応援し、支えて下さった先生方、生徒の皆さん、引率の本間先生をはじめ、多くの方々に感謝申し上げます。また、僕を引っ張り、模擬国連へと導いてくれた相方の照井秀星くんには頭が上がりません。これからも、よろしくお願いします。EXCELSIOR vol.18146
