Further, by creating a form of tourism that respects the Maori traditions, it has created many jobs for the locals who hold passion and knowledge about the land, thus revealing how ecotourism can also be beneficial in the economic sense. What does our school do?Otumoetai College showcases a large amount of pride for our country, and nds ways to emphasize this through ecotourism. For example, we have a large amount of exchange students from Japan, Canada, USA, Brazil, Italy, France and many more, that come and go throughout the school year. These students are traditionally welcomed at our Marae (a Maori meeting house) by our Kapa Haka group, something that truly expresses the way culture is a large part of tourism. Not only do we embrace ecotourism here at in our own country, the school also makes the eort to respect ecotourism in other countries. Every two years a group of students travels to Mexico, however this is not just for a holiday. is group builds two houses for those who are less fortunate, interacts with the local people and visits an orphanage. This fits the ecotourism goal as it allows them to see different areas of the world, like a tourist desires, whilst respecting and helping the environment and people of Mexico. EXCELSIOR vol.1835
