Asuka Miura :Student Forum CommitteeWe chose ecotourism as our topic to study, in the area of “Creating a Sustainable Society”. Ecotourism aims to raise people’s interest in and awareness of environmental conservation, by having them sightsee in nature. We learned many things about this topic as we studied it. For example, we learned that many people have not even heard of ecotourism. As we prepared for the forum, some people asked us, “What is ecotourism?” People all over the world are doing ecotourism. Of course, this includes Japan. ere are many kinds of ecotourism – mountain climbing, camping, birdwatching, walking in the forest, etc. – and people are doing ecotourism in Iwate, where we live. We took a trip with students from our sister schools to Koiwai Farm, where we went on a tour of the place. I want to write a little about this, since we did not have a chance to present about it at the forum. On our tour, we were able to see the forest, which other visitors can’t enter. e trees had been planted by people, so they stood in lines. People cut down the trees when they need lumber, but they always replant trees there. It was a very natural place, and we learned that this was because people help preserve the forest environment. It was beautiful even though it was rainy, so I think that it is a good tour to go on regardless of whether it’s sunny or rainy. Nature is beautiful in either case. I want more people to know about this environmental eort, because it is being done close to us. We can understand the importance of nature by actually being in nature. Sometimes we may need to be a little brave to participate in activities to protect the environment – even when we know that they are important – but this is something that everyone can do. One such activity which many elementary students in Japan do is to go camping. I’m glad that we were able to tell students from our sister schools about ecotourism in Japan. EXCELSIOR vol.1882
