in Finland. Wherever there was a forest, there was also a lake. However, unlike Japan, there are not mountains everywhere. The forests in Finland are very quiet and gentle. Some of the trees/plants in the forest there were the same as in Japan. However, I noticed that there were many more kinds of moss than in Japan. In addition, although we couldn’t see it because it was winter, in the summer in Finland you can go berry-picking in the forest. ere are 3-5 kinds of berries, and people pick and freeze these. I ate berries every day at my homestay. I love berries, so I was very happy. Next, about tree biomass. We have tree biomass in Iwate, but we don’t use it to produce energy. In Finland, however, they use tree biomass to provide almost all of their electricity. ere are tree biomass power plants almost everywhere. ere are a lot of forests in Finland, and I thought that it was great that they are using their resources effectively. I also went to the pool next to the school, which is heated by electricity from tree biomass. ere are four pools there and a sauna, and I was surprised that they can produce enough electricity for all of these.Next, virtual reality forestry. We went to a technical college, and we got to virtually use a machine which they use in the forest. The machine was more complex than I expected, and it was difficult to operate. It was my first time to see such a system for learning about forestry and training for a job, and it was amazing. We learned about differences in the forests in Japan and Finland, realized that there are good things about Japanese forests, and learned about Finland’s advanced forestry system, so it was a very good experience for us.Finally, we went to Finland’s capital city, Helsinki. Helsinki is such a beautiful city. There was a church which was built inside of a rock formation, and it was in harmony with nature.I was happy to learn many things in Finland and to be able to see Helsinki. is is a rare opportunity, so I am grateful for being given it. Super Global High School Fieldwork in Oversea CountriesEXCELSIOR vol.1897
