無限の可能性を秘めている若い諸君へA Message to Students, who have Limitless Possibilities新渡戸国際塾塾長／元国連大使／岩手県立大学学長　谷口　　誠Makoto TaniguchiHead of the The Nitobe Leadership Program / Former Ambassador to the United Nations /Former President of Iwate Prefectural UniversityContribution寄 稿　　First, I would like to congratulate your school on the publication of the 20th edition of “Excelsior”.　　When I worked at Iwate Prefectural University, I was invited on several occasions to lecture at Morioka Chuo High School. On these occasions, I was very impressed that your school was orderly and working to create a strong international program. In addition, it was an honor to attend the opening ceremony of your junior high school this year.　　What I want to tell the next generation of adults is that you should set your goals as high as possible. It is unlikely that you will achieve them, but if you set low goals you won’t feel satis ed when you do achieve them. 　　Regardless of the way globalization proceeds in Japan, it is clear that Japan cannot survive or develop if it isolates itself from other countries.　　It has been 100 years since the end of World War I. Unfortunately, many countries in the world today are looking only after themselves, there is increasing division in the world, and many countries are pursuing isolationist policies.　　However, if countries do not work together, peace and development will be impossible. As a result, it is important for each of the participants at the forum to make friendships with people from other countries, to go beyond differences in culture and history, to communicate with people from around the world, and to work together.　　In order to do this, Japanese students should rst thoroughly study the Japanese language. They should also learn many things about Japanese history and culture. I believe Japanese people who have not mastered their own language cannot master English or other foreign languages.　　Your school has worked hard to educate students to be global citizens who can act on the world stage. In the process of doing this, you have emphasized English language acquisition. This is important, as English is the universal language in today’s world. I hope that your school will continue to emphasize this, to teach your students about Japanese culture and history, and to educate students who can contribute to the world in the 21st century.　　Nitobe Inazo, a writer whom I respect, wrote a book in English called Bushido: The Soul of Japan. In it, he wrote about Japanese history and culture, comparing them with those of the West. The reason he was able to act as Under-Secretary General of the League of Nations and to contribute to the world was because of his thorough knowledge of Japan’s history and culture. Iwate Prefecture has produced many people who have been active internationally. Japanese students in Iwate also have this wonderful DNA. In the near future, they will probably also need to learn Chinese and Korean, in order to communicate with people in these neighboring countries.　　While in junior and senior high school, you should decide what you want to do in the future and work hard to make this a reality. You have limitless possibilities. You must not give up just because you fail once or twice. Please work hard to achieve your goals. Your dreams will certainly come true.　最初に「エクセルシア」が20号という大きな節目を迎えられたことをお祝いいたします。　私が岩手県立大学にいた頃に、貴校に数回お招きを受け講演させていただいたことがありました。当時より貴校は規律正しく、国際性を持った素晴らしい高等学校だと強く印象づけられていました。また、本年は附属中学校の開校式にもお招き頂き、光栄に存じました。　次の世代を担う若い皆さんたちに言いたいことは、若い時は目標を出来るだけ高く持つことです。目標はなかなか実現できるものではありませんが、低くすればたとえ実現できても達成感はないと思います。　これからの日本はグローバル化がどのような形で進むにせよ、日本は世界の中で孤立しては生きていけず、また発展することもできないのです。　今年は第１次世界大戦後100年を迎えます。残念なことに現在の世界は各国とも自国第１主義が強くなり、「分裂と分断」現象が起こり、各国が孤立化の様相を来たしております。しかし、世界各国が連携を深めていかなければ、世界の平和も、発展もあり得ません。そのために皆さんには各国から集った一人ひとりと若い頃から生涯の絆を深め、各国の文化、歴史の違いを超えて、世界の人々と対話を重ね、心と心の交流を図っていくことが大事です。　そのためには、日本人である皆様はまず日本語をしっかり学ぶことです。また、自身の基盤である日本の歴史、文化をしっかり学ぶことです。母国語の日本語をしっかりマスターできない人が英語をはじめ外国語をマスターできることはないと考えられます。　また、貴校は私が知るかぎり、グローバル化時代に適応した国際的人材の育成に力を入れて来られました。そのため英語教育に重点を置いて来られました。これは素晴らしいことだと思います。英語は国際公用財であり、貴校がますますこの良き伝統を生かし、さらに日本人は日本の文化、歴史をしっかり学び、21世紀に国際的に活躍できる若い世代の育成に努められことを期待しております。　私の尊敬する新渡戸稲造は、国際的名著﹃武士道﹄を英語で書かれました。その中で西欧文明との比較において、日本の歴史、文化を発信しましたが、日本の歴史、文化に精通していたからこそ国際連盟の事務次長として活躍し、国際貢献ができたのです。岩手県は新渡戸稲造をはじめ、国際的に活躍した多くの人材を出してきました。皆さんもこの素晴らしいDNAを引き継いでいるでしょう。また、これからは若い諸君には、日本の近隣諸国との交流を深めるために「中国語」と「ハングル」を学ぶことも必要となるでしょう。　自分が将来なりたいことを中学、高校時代に決めて、その実現に向けてコツコツと努力することです。皆さん方は無限の可能性を秘めています。一度や二度失敗しても、あきらめては駄目です。目標に向かって努力してください。必ず道が拓けます。EXCELSIOR vol.20106
