祝CHUO国際フォーラム20周年On the 20th Anniversary of the CHUO International Forum ～異文化理解は足下から～ICET-InterCultural Education Today 理事校長　原田　房枝Fusae HaradaDirector of ICET-Intercultural Education TodayContribution寄 稿　　The world is changing at incredible speed. It’s hard to grasp what’s happening, let alone predict the future. When we look around we see so many wars, disparity of wealth and much suffering. While cultural diversity is a source of global richness, it can be a source of con ict as well. Can’t we coexist in peace and help each other work towards mutual benefit? What can we, the youth in 2018, do to create a better world for the future?　　The CHUO International Forum is an opportunity to showcase visions of hope for a harmonious world and better future. It’s where young people from many corners of the world gather to celebrate diversity, enjoy cultural differences and discuss important issues without fear of judgment. The successful continuation of the forum for the last 20 years is to be celebrated. 　　Having lived nearly 40 years in the culturally diverse city of Sydney, Australia, I’ve come to realise that each person has their own culture and contributes to society’s diversity. I’ve observed people with cultural differences work together beautifully, and I’ve seen con ict within the same ethnicity, religion, and language groups. My conclusion is that by respecting one another, inclusive of and beyond culture, we create a better world. 　　But how we do it? There are three necessary attitudes when being mindful towards others. I call it URA:U=Understanding (apply our best to understand the person)R=Respect (respect who the person is with politeness and without applying our own prejudice) A=Acceptance (accept that there are differences and then work towards mutual bene t)　　URA can be applied to members of the family and friends in our immediate surroundings. Having these attitudes as a basis for human relationships, we can extend our friendship to any corner of the world.　　We see URA very clearly at each CHUO International Forum in Morioka—a relatively tiny town in the north of Japan where, for a short window in time, the globe gathers. 　　With great respect, I congratulate the CHUO Team on the continuous success of the Forum, for upholding and strengthening the original vision of the leaders, for the effort of all the teachers and students who organize it every year, for the enthusiasm of the participants from all over the world, and for making a living model of co-existing cultural diversity.　ビジョンを形とし、内容を深め、地球の様々な方向に羽を広げ続けてきたこの20年、CHUO国際フォーラムは、世界から集まる高校生の文化祭典として 他に類を見ない発展を遂げてきました。居ながらにして世界各地の文化や言語や価値観に直接に接する中央生たちが受ける恩恵は計り知れません。　「異文化理解」という言葉が使われるようになって久しいのですが、異なる文化を理解し互恵となる協力関係を促進することが、平和な未来を保つ唯一の方法であり、それは、生徒の皆さんのこれからの活躍にかかっています。　では、「異文化」とは一体何なのでしょうか。日本人以外の民族が持つものが「異文化」なのか。外国の生活習慣や考え方が「異文化」なのか。私は、40年以上外国に住み、様々な民族が共生する環境で暮らしてきました。異なる民族が対立する場面や、同じ民族でも宗教や考え方が違うとぶつかり合う場面を多々見てきました。同じ文化だと通常私たちが思っている日本人同士もぶつかり合います。同時に、国籍、民族、言語、食生活、日常の生活習慣が異なる人々が様々に協力しながら、本当に仲の良いコミュニティを形成しているところもたくさん見てきました。　そこで学んだことは、人間は国や民族に関わらず、一人ひとりが皆その人独自の「文化」を持っていて、お互いそれを大事にする意識と姿勢を持つことが互恵の共生を無限大にするのだということです。　そう考えると、国籍や民族に関わらず、誰に対しても同じ姿勢で向き合うことが共生と協力の基本だということがよく見えてきます。その際、３つの姿勢＝URA精神 を貫くことが良い関係につながります。1 U=Understanding 相手の人を理解し知ろうと努める2 R=Respect 相手の立場、持っている文化、考え方、　 価値観を否定せず、学ぶ機会として尊重し、常に　　　礼節を持って接する3 A=Acceptance 相違があって当たり前という前提 　　 に立ち、違いを認識し、相互の恩恵を図る　この姿勢は、家族や友達など自分の周囲に良い人間関係を作ることに役立つだけでなく、そのまま異国の人々にも通用し、「多様性」を包み込むことができます。後は、世界の共通言語である英語を磨くだけ。皆さんが英語を学んでいる理由は、良いつながりを地球上に広げ、自分の人生を豊かにし、より多くの人々に貢献できるようになるためです。中央生である特権を生かし、「学び」と「URAの実践」にますます励まれますよう。EXCELSIOR vol.20108
