the beginning, my host family was talking to me slowly, but later I could join their conversation without having them slowing down their talk.   Through this study abroad experience, the thing I learnt is the importance of keeping trying. Before I went to Australia, I didn’t work hard, and I lacked the proactive attitude. It is because I could get by without making any effort. But after I arrived in Australia, I was not able to understand anything both at school and at my host family. As soon as school started, I was shocked that I could not do anything by myself. I then realized, ‘if I don’t take actions, nothing would change’ ‘I don’t have time to be depressed, I must start to act now’. Once I admitted that I could not do anything, and could not understand anything, I became not afraid of mistakes, and I tried to do many things by myself.  When I was in Japan, I didn’t believe the saying, ‘the effort is always rewarded’ because I thought it is just a hopeful thinking of a small number of successful people of special abilities. However, my efforts were rewarded as I can see it in my grade and English proficiency. It was the most important thing I have learned during my study abroad and I believe that I can definitely apply this in my future.  Before joining the study abroad program I wanted to work for the United Nation, but now I want to work as a Japanese language teacher in foreign countries. The Adelaide city where I was is a big city, and there were many people who likes Japan, and want to learn Japanese. Actually, there was Japanese language course at the Glenunga international high school, but a person said Adelaide doesn’t have any place and opportunities to study Japanese. Because of that, even if they want to work or live in Japan, they cannot do so easily. Japan is a very famous country. If I can provide opportunities for the people from other countries who are interested in Japan to study Japanese as a language teacher, I can facilitate exchange between Japan and other countries and further can contribute to the globalization of Japan.   My purposes of study abroad were to improve my English, and to be able to communicate with people from other counties and to get to know their cultures. I believe my speaking ability has been improved. I am now planning to concentrate on studying the grammar and vocabulary.As for the second purpose of my study abroad, I could make many friends from various countries and get to know their cultures. There are people from various places living in Australia, and my high school had many exchange students from different countries like Australia, Korea, China, India, France and Mexico.  At the end, I was supported by many people; my agent, Ms. Fusae Simpson, teachers of Glenunga high school and Chuo high school, my host family, and my friends and family in Japan. Remembering gratitude toward them, I will keep working hard. Thank you.  私はアデレードのグレナンガインターナショナルハイスクールに1年間留学してきました。留学を決めた理由は2つです。1つめは英語力を身につけること、2つめは海外の人や文化に触れることです。私は中学生の時から、海外でいろんな国の人と一緒に働けるような人間になりたいと思っており、高校生のうちに1年間違う国で生活するという貴重な機会を得ることにより、その理想により近づけるのではないかと思い、Rコースを志望しました。 留学前の英語力は中くらいで、リーディング、リスニング、ライティング、スピーキングの中で特に得意といえるものもなく、現地の授業や宿題について行けるかとても不安でした。また、私は小学校の時から、勉強面では大変な努力をした体験がありませんでした。その影響から、自分から何かに一生懸命に取り組んだり、打ち込んだりするという「積極性」が欠けていました。 留学初期の頃は留学前に不安に思っていたことが的中しました。英語が全く理解できませんでした。ホームステイ先では、とても優しいファミリーたちがたくさん話しかけてくれましたが、一度では内容をなかなか理解できず何度も聞き返したり、聞き取れたとしても「Yes」か「No」という状態でした。学校でも同様に、先生が話すことが全く理解できず、レポートやプレゼンテーションなど今までやったことのないような課題にとても苦労しました。私の通っていた学校では課題全てタスクシートというものに沿って進めるという形でした。 しかし、私はまずこのタスクシートの内容が全く理解できず、課題が難しいとかいう以前に、先生に何を求められているのかでさえ理解不能でした。英語を話す機会も少なく、そんな自分に焦りつつ、毎日の生活に疲れ切って、何か努力をしようといStudy Abroad Program in Australia 1年間留学プログラムEXCELSIOR vol.20 ◆ CHUO国際教育フォーラム20回記念号83
