Why do I Have to Study? 〜 Classes to Help Students Connect What they Learn in School with the Real World 〜 “I don’t know why I have to study so much”, “There are some subjects that I dislike or am not interested in”, “I don’t like tests, and I am worried about the university entrance exams”. These feelings on the part of students are all understandable. Occasionally, there is a student who likes and is good at studying, and this type of student does well on university entrance exams. However, I suspect that the majority of students, including those who get good grades, wonder why they have to study so many subjects and why they have such a busy schedule every day. In addition, teachers who prepare their students for university entrance exams probably wonder if they are teaching the right content and using the best teaching methods in their classes. I myself wonder how many students learn the true meaning of studying before they graduate from high school. Both students and teachers in Japan probably think that they have to focus on passing the university entrance exams, so they just memorize what they need to know and practice past university tests, and don’t think about the real meaning of studying or about how to apply what they learn to the real world. This is probably a realistic thing to do. In my case, I did not think about the meaning of studying or its usefulness until I became an adult. To be honest, this is too late. Adults feel something when they reach a certain age, namely: “I wish I had studied more when I was young”. By this point, however, it is usually too late. In particular, students like myself who received bad grades in their teens, repeat the above phrase every time they have a problem as an adult. However, this utterance bewilders current junior and senior high school students. They wonder what it is that they should study more, because adults do not clearly state this. This is something which I noticed. Even if I were able to return to the time when I was a junior and senior high school student, there are many subjects that I would honestly not want to study. My motive for beginning a class for students at Morioka Chuo High School and Junior High School, linking what the students learn in the classroom with the real world, is based on personal regrets and on things I wish I had done differently. The question is: what do I now wish that I had learned when I was young? Finding the answer to this question is necessary in order to teach this class and is something I want to do as an adult. In April 2018, Morioka Chuo High School and Junior High School started on a new journey as a combined school. The rst year junior high school students, with beautiful, innocent faces, became students of Morioka Chuo. Of course, the rst-year students at the senior high school also entered the school’s gate as freshmen. Bearing the heavy responsibility of offering this class linking what the students learn in the classroom with the real world I have faced young people honestly. Believing in their potential, and imagining a prosperous world created by them when they mature, is an interesting and rewarding thing about working in the eld of education. It is work worth doing. Toshiaki Komatsu / Professor at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
