He was so eager that half of his body was leaning towards me over the coffee table. Since that time, his dream was realized and has grown from strength to strength. This man was Mr. Yoshikazu Nakata, then Deputy Principal of Chuo High School. I congratulate him and his successors on making this ryugaku (studying abroad) program such a success.　　Whenever Mr. Nakata and his colleague Mr. Oikawa visited the students in Australia, they would drive great distances (up to 1400km in 2 days!), which surprised even local Australians. Their adventurous spirits, daringness, curiosity, flexibility of mind and physical strength modelled exactly what the young students would need if they wanted live successfully abroad for a year. 　　For students who come to study abroad, it is not easy to live in a foreign environment, away from one’s parents, 　21年前、東京丸の内ホテルのロビーでテーブルの上に身を乗り出して熱く語る人物がいました。　「我が校の生徒を１年間、安全に、海外で勉強させたい。そのために、MCA (Morioka Chuo Australia)をオーストラリアに設立したい。ぜひとも、手を貸していただきたい」と。 その時の情熱の火は、その後毎年日本の北の地から留学してくる16歳の若者たちに引き継がれ、20年間、ずっとシドニーで燃え続けてきました。盛岡中央高等学校の海外１年留学プログラムは、この方、時の中田義計教頭先生なしには語れません。　中田先生が留学中の生徒たちを元気づけるためにご同僚の及川先生と何度か渡豪された際には、1,400kmを２日間で運転されるなど長距離に慣れている現地の人々をも驚かすものでしたが、先生方の冒険心、大胆さ、好奇心、柔軟な考え方、疲れを知らない心身のタフさは、実は、留学を大きく実らせるために、若者たちが最も必要としているものだったのです。　　16歳の若者が親元を離れ、１年間異国の地で生活するのが簡単であるはずがなく、留学は、まさに個々の「生きる力」が試される時です。 様々な場面でいろいろな実体験をしてきている若者たちは、新しい土地で知らない人々に囲まれても、日常で使う言語が変わっても、人々と交流でき、信頼関係が築け、自分の居心地の良い場所を確立し、学習に従事することができます。学校の成績が良くても、実体験に乏しい若者はどうしていいか分からず、立ち往生する場面が頻繁にあります。「生きる力」というのは、体験値に基づく生活技術とそれを上手に活用できるEQ（心の知能指数）が組み合わさったものなのだということが普段の居住空間を出ると如実に分かります。　留学のすばらしいところは、毎日が新しい体験の連続だということです。生活面でも、精神面でも、人間関係At first, our students are nervous, but thanks to the helpof everyone in your department, their teachers, friends,and host families, they have a great time.
