things in all places. When everyone understands this, we become friends with one another, and the world becomes united. We then start to think about our mother earth and of ourselves as global citizens. This is related to the theme of last year’s forum: “Think Globally, Act Locally – Transforming our world using the SDGs”, which was based on the United Nation’s 17 sustainable development goals. I would like to warmly welcome teachers from our sister schools who are here at the forum for the first time. Teachers from Impington Village College in Cambridge England participated in the forum for the rst time this year. We asked Mr. Simon Warburton to give a keynote speech on behalf of Principal Ryan Kelsall, who was unable to attend this year’s forum. We also asked Mr. Makoto Taniguchi – who is the Head of the Nitobe International School, former Ambassador to the United Nations, and former President of Iwate Prefectural University - to give a keynote speech in the afternoon. It is my hope that everyone will think of themselves as global citizens, and that this forum will continue to develop in various ways. I have a request for the student participants at the forum. I want them to use the stage at Malios as their platform to express their ideas and feelings. In addition, I would like to tell everyone that the teacher participants held a lively roundtable discussion at this year’s forum. The theme of this year’s roundtable was “An ideal school that can prepare young people for the world of tomorrow”. The roundtable was facilitated by Professor Toshiaki Komatsu of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. Professor Komatsu specializes in global education and he wrote an article for Excelsior 17 entitled “’Morioka’ will mean developing Global Citizens”. He has helped us develop the forum over the past ve years, and we are grateful for his guidance. Finally, I would like to thank all our guests, educators present, and people in the media for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend this year’s forum. I am deeply grateful to you for all that you do to make this event possible. Thank you for watching this enjoyable and meaningful event where participants share their ideas about education. Please think on a world-wide scale, contribute to Morioka and Iwate, and give us more advice as we continue to develop our school’s programs and the forum. EXCELSIOR vol.218
