we already know but choose to avoid, they seek to change our attitudes but not our behaviours meaning that their message is transient and the least affected group of these types of campaigns, young people. In order to have a demonstrable impact we need campaigns and education programmes that focus on positive emotions rather than negative, that highlight the social norms rather than the aberrant exceptions and use humour, truth and even irony to establish new behaviours and effect a purposeful change. We can support this with a compassionate, respectful and inspiring education experiences – experiences such as this education forum. Impington Village College has been an International Baccalaureate World School since 1991 and we place the Mission of the IB organisation, at the heart of all our students’ day to day experience. That mission being to: develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. We make sure that all 1400 IVC students take part in Creativity, Activity and Service by providing over 60 activities for all students to choose from each year. Our service strand enables us to send students to care homes to talk and engage with the elderly, support the learning activities in our local primary schools and raise money for charities based in and around Cambridge. Our students are organised into Houses – Turing House (after Alan Turing) supports Centre 33 – a support service aimed at providing physical, mental and financial support people, Wallenberg House (after Raoul Wallenberg) supports Blue Smile – a mental health support group for young people. Parks House (after Rosa Parks) supports Jimmy’s Shelter – a organisation that provides shelter to the homeless in Cambridge and Keller House (after Helen Keller) supports East Anglian Childrens’ Hospice – a service supporting families with children experiencing life threatening illnesses. In order to develop compassion, we should 目に見えて明らかな効果を得るには、否定的な感情ではなく、肯定的な感情に訴え、例外的な事象ではなく、社会規範に焦点を当てたキャンペーンや教育プログラムを実施することが必要です。また、新たな行動様式を確立し、目的を持って変革を実現するには、ユーモアを交えて真実を伝えることや、時には皮肉を用いることも必要です。そのために私達にできる事と言えば、思いやりと尊敬とやる気に満ちた学習体験の場を提供すること、つまり本日の教育フォーラムのような機会を創ることなのです。奉仕活動と支援活動 インピントン・ヴィレッジ・カレッジは1991年に創立された国際バカロレア（IB）ワールドスクールで、IB認定校としての使命を日々の教育の中心に据えています。IB認定校の使命とは、多様な文化に対する理解と尊重の精神を通して、より良い、より平和な世界の構築に貢献することのできる探究心、知識、思いやりに富んだ若者を育成する、というものです。 インピントン・ヴィレッジ・カレッジの1400人の学生は全員、教育プログラムの一環として、毎年提供される60種を超える活動の中から選択する形で、「創造的な活動」「身体的活動」「奉仕活動」に参加することが義務付けられています。「奉仕活動」では、高齢者施設でお年寄りと話をしたり触れ合ったりすることや、地元の小学校で子どもたちの学習を手伝うこと、ケンブリッジやその周辺を基盤とした慈善活動のための募金を行うことなどをしています。また、学生は皆、「ハウス」と呼ばれるグループを構成し、ハウスごとに奉仕活動を行っています。アラン・チューリングに因んで名付けられた「チューリングハウス」が支援しているのは「センター33」で、身体的、精神的、経済的支援を必要とする人々に対する支援活動を行っています。ラウル・ワレンバーグに因んだ「ワレンバーグハウス」は若年者向けのメンタルヘルスを支援する「ブルースマイル」を支援しています。ローザ・パークスに因んだ「パークスハウス」はケンブリッジのホームレスに住まいを提供している組織、「ジミーズシェルター」を支援しています。そして、ヘレン・ケラーに因んだ「ケラーハウス」は、イーストアングリア小児専門病院で、命に関わる病を抱えた子供を持つ家庭を支援しています。 思いやりの精神を育むためには、非常に厳しく、目をふさぎたくなるような状況を学生が体験することを奨励しなければならなくなります。私達が目指す奉仕の精神とは、自分よりも他人を優先するというものであり、学生がそうした体験を生涯、心に留めることを私達は望んでいるからです。 EXCELSIOR vol.2115
