encourage students to experience situations we hope they never have to revisit – our service strand seeks to highlight the importance of putting others rst above ourselves and we want it to be an experience that students reflect throughout their lives. You will have no doubt heard about the actions of the recent climate action strikes stemming from the Friday demonstrations of Greta Thunberg – a wonderful example of how one person, one young person can make a stand and make communities take notice. Our College supported students’ wishes to strike – we saw it as evidence of students embodying the IB mission of caring about wanting to make the world a better place. Greta Thunberg has certainly inspired our students but thankfully there are other examples of young people standing up to make a difference. How many of you have heard of Zero Hour? A project set up by two teenagers, Jamie Margolin and Elsa Mengisto, who met up over Instagram. They led hundreds of students on a climate march in Chicago a year before Greta Thunberg. Or how about Amika George? Two years ago, Amika led a gathering of over 1000 students at Downing Street protesting at period poverty – British schoolgirls missing school due to not being able to afford sanitary towels – something that should not happen anywhere but particularly in a developed country. Amika’s actions has led to signicant changes in Scotland and Wales but not other parts of our Union...just yet. Earlier I mentioned Helen Keller – the inspiration behind our Keller house. Over an amazing life she said many wonderful things but two of her many quotes pertain well to this forum; “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”
