Our theme is women’s participation in society, which is based on the SDG “gender equality”. We used a multi-national approach based on the unique cultural, social, political, and economic environment of each country and found many different solutions . We have established four key areas which affect women’s participation in society: governments’ policies, work life and children, education and traditions.GOVERNMENT POLICY Governmental laws have an indirect impact on women’s participation in society. In general, they only reinforce the stereotypes that society gives them. In concequence we face problems like a lack of female representation in the government, stereotypes, and the fact thats women's jobs is taken as an excuse to help make the economy grow. Now that i've introduced the subject, we can listen to some examples of discrimination in different countries’ government’s policies. In Indonesia, one of the biggest flaws in government policy is the lack of protection for atypical workers, most of whom are women. The lack of protection for these workers means that they are left in an insecure environment, for example they do not receive financial compensation for injuries sustained during work.In Australia, the Government itself has no quotas for female representation however one of our two major political parties, the Australian Labour Party, does. In the 1990s they established a goal to have women run for at least 35% of their winnable seats. This quota means than the Labour Party is now 47% females. It is seen as being very positive to have an even mix of males and females. In Japan we have laws declaring gender equality, such as the Gender Equality in Employment Act which promotes securing equal opportunity and treatment between men and women in employment, but these laws don’t necessarily represent the real situation. Additionally, when women try to change things, for example by filing a petition to stop companies requiring women to wear heels to work, the government does not act. In France, the government sets quotas for how many women should be in executive positions, but this can have a negative impact as it may mean that the most qualified person for a job does not get the position. It can cause a negative reaction from employers and the public due to the reverse discrimination, which could make quality of work life worse and lessen support for gender equality policies. In the UK, there is also a lot of legislation which prevents progress in gender equality, such as the difficulties activists have been having at getting the luxury tax on female sanitary products removed, or the opposition from some members of parliament towards new legislation meant GROUP 3Women’s participation in society女性の社会進出EXCELSIOR vol.2124
