As a part of our preparation for presenting at the 21st Chuo International Education Forum, we visited the Morioka Gender Equality Promotion Centre. We were lucky enough to hear the president of the centre, Masahiro Ueda, speak about the current state of gender equality in Japan and how it has changed throughout history which greatly aided our understanding of the challenges facing women in Japan. Masahiro Ueda gave us an overview of the centre that had been running since 2000 before explaining in great detail how Japan’s Constitution, as well as other laws enacted more recently, served to ensure the protection on women’s rights. He also touched on the factors that were currently preventing Japan from achieving gender equality, such as tradition. This lecture allowed us to gain a different perspective on the topic of gender equality and gave us many ideas for potential solutions that we later included in our presentation. It was also a wonderful opportunity to see inside the Morioka Gender Equality Promotion Centre and appreciate the extensive work done there. During the forum week we got many opportunities to bond with our friends from all over the world. One of these was the Wankosoba noodle eating competition. We entered a large room and each took our places at the table, surrounded by our competition. After this we ate, ate and ate some more. During this competition it was not only about who ate the most noodles but also cheering on and supporting your friends during their noodle eating experience. The competition had varying successes as some ate 200 bowls and others ate 20; as a collective however we broke both of the previous records for the forum. This competition was not (just) about the amount of bowls you ate, it was the amount of fun we had! Through cheering each other on we got to bond as a group and make new friends; friends who we will have for life from all over the world! フォーラム・ウィークでは、世界から来た人たちと友達になる機会がMY FORUM私のフォーラム -参加者の感想-Thoughts from participantsDavidson High Schoolデイビッドソン・ハイスクールAUSTRALIAオーストラリアVisiting the Morioka Gender Equality Promotion Centreもりおか女性センターを訪問してAlicia Jane HumphreyStudentMaking friends at Wankosobaわんこそばでできた友達Phoebe HollandStudentEXCELSIOR vol.2138
