them to hear and respect the diversity of experiences of others and base their decision making on this was wonderful to witness. The final presentations of the students on one of three SDG’s was of a high standard, with each group presenting quite differently. We were humbled by the formality and professionalism of the Forum. Everything was so well planned and the venue for the final presentations was prestigious. Hearing the feedback from each staff discussion group made us realise how much more freedom we have in New Zealand around curriculum design, assessment and pedagogy. All countries recognise that we still don’t have education “right”, but we are adapting to meet changing needs. The home stay hosts were incredibly kind and many a tear was shed on departure. It was lovely having the staff stay together. It provided time to mingle. We appreciated the fabulous meals put on for us and visits to various places. I particularly enjoyed the tea ceremony experience, the onsen, karaoke and the trip to the UNESCO Heritage Site to see the magnicent temples. Japan is special. Geographically very scenic, very clean, greener than expected and incredibly safe. The people who organised and hosted the Forum were incredibly generous with their time and gifts. Thank you to all who made the opportunity possible, but especially Machiko. As a part of our preparation for presenting at the 21st Chuo International Education Forum, we visited the Morioka Gender Equality Promotion Centre. We were lucky enough to hear the president of the centre, Masahiro Ueda, speak about the current state of gender equality in Japan and how it has changed throughout history which greatly aided our understanding of the challenges facing women in Japan. Masahiro Ueda gave us an overview of the centre that had been running since 2000 before explaining in great detail how Japan’s Constitution, as well as other laws enacted more recently, served to ensure the protection on women’s rights. He also touched on the factors that were currently preventing Japan from achieving gender equality, such as tradition. This lecture allowed us to gain a different perspective on the topic of gender equality and gave us many ideas for potential solutions that we later included in our presentation. It was also a wonderful opportunity to see inside the Morioka Gender Equality Promotion Centre and appreciate the extensive work done there. My Kiwi Experience at the Forum 2019「キウイ」として2019年度フォーラムに参加してGrace BlissettStudentEXCELSIOR vol.2141
