when I was a child, I am optimistic by nature and I always had “dreams and aspirations”. My dream was to be active on the international stage like Inazo Nitobe, a diplomat from Iwate. Mr. Nitobe was the first Japanese person to be Under-Secretary General at the League of Nations. The United Nations – which is the successor to this organization – works to maintain peace around the world. Since the time that I was as young as you students, I had a “dream and aspiration” to work – in the future – at an international organization like the United Nations.5.I did the best I could to work towards my “dream and aspiration”. Life is not easy, and it is not easy to achieve one’s “dreams and aspirations”. Achieving high-level “dreams and aspirations” requires extreme effort and perseverance, but I think that working hard to achieve your goals gives meaning to your life.6.I did not start off on an elite course in life, but rather walked a difcult path to where I am now. Some lucky and talented people quickly enter a top university and soon find good jobs. I saw many people like this when I was in the Japanese Foreign Service, but I often doubted whether these people on the elite-course were doing useful jobs in which they were truly contributing to society.7.You will probably have many twists and turns in your long lives, with both fun and difficult times. Do not become discouraged if you fail once or twice. It is important to learn from your failures and to use the things you learn to become stronger. The world in which you live is becoming more unstable, and it may be difficult to be optimistic about the future. The future of globalization is in doubt because of the Trump administration, and increasing divisions in international society which we can see in the breakdown of NAFTA and in Great Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. There is also the trade war between the U.S. and China and friction between Japan and South Korea.8.I want students from Iwate to try to deal with these problems by going overseas, experiencing many things there, and then coming back to Iwate to contribute to Japan’s development. Inazo Nitobe, the diplomat from Iwate who said “I want to be a bridge across the Pacific”, went to America in the past to として活躍されました。時代は変わって現在では国際連合（the United Nations）が、世界の平和維持機構として存在しています。私は皆さんのような若い頃より、将来は国際連合のような国際機関で働きたいという「夢と希望」を持っていました。５. この「夢と希望」を実現するために、私なりに努力してきたつもりです。世の中は決して甘いものではなく、「夢と希望」を実現することは決して容易なことではありません。特に高いレベルの「夢と希望」を実現するためには大変な努力と忍耐を必要としますが、私は自分の目指す目標に向かってコツコツと努力をすることに人生の意義があると考えています。６. 私はどちらかというと、いわゆるエリート・コースを歩んできたわけではなく、かなり苦労して「遠回りの人生」を歩んできたと考えています。世の中には恵まれた優秀な人がいて、最短コースで一流大学に入り、優秀なコースを歩んできた人もいます。私の外務省時代の同僚にもそのような人達が多くいましたが、私はそのようないわゆる最短距離の優秀なエリート・コースを歩んできた人達が世の中で本当に社会的に貢献し、役立つ仕事をしてきたか疑問に思うことも多々ありました。７. 若い春秋に富む皆さんにも、長い人生には紆余曲折があり、楽しいこともつらいこともあるでしょう。一回や二回失敗しても、挫けないことです。そして失敗から学び、その失敗を糧として強くなることです。特にこれから生きてゆく世界は不安定化し、なかなか未来が見通せない世界かも知れません。グローバル化、グローバル化といっていた時代の先行きが米国のトランプ政権の下で怪しくなり、また米国のNAFTA（北米自由貿易協定）の統合の停滞、英国のEU（欧州同盟）離脱など分断化が進行してきています。また、いわゆる“米中貿易戦争”や“日韓問題”も出てきました。当日代読された姉歯武司さん（新渡戸国際塾事務局長）EXCELSIOR vol.2167
