work to improve relations between Japan and the U.S. Now, in the 21st century, we need people to act as bridges between Japan and the rest of Asia, which is experiencing dynamic development. Please try to become individuals who can contribute to society, instead of just seeking personal gain.9.In conclusion, I want to say the following three things to the young people here today.1)Become workers who can succeed in an era of globalization. At present, globalization is experiencing a number of setbacks, but it is likely that globalization will continue to progress in some form. As a result, I want you to explore and learn about the world while you are young, instead of just staying in Japan.2)In order to do this, I want you to learn English of course – since it is the common language in the world today – but also to learn Chinese and Korean as these countries are close to Japan.3)I have learned from my experience in life that one needs “luck, a relaxed attitude, and perseverance” to succeed in life. You must persevere even if you fail at something once or twice in life. I myself have also failed at things in life, but I was usually glad that I kept on trying instead of giving up. Many unexpected things happen in life, so it is important to have a relaxed attitude instead of getting nervous about things. Brilliant people who are too wound-up cannot communicate effectively with people from the 193 different developed and developing countries - in places like Africa, Latin America, and in communist areas - in organizations such as the United Nations. It is necessary for us to listen carefully to the problems and difculties of people from these places and to try to understand their situations. I think that people in the Tohoku region of Japan – where Iwate is located – are not amboyant, but that they are perseverant and hard working. People like this are a good t for working at the United Nations and in developing countries in places such as Africa and Latin America. I hope that Morioka Chuo High School will continue to develop its international programs and that the young people here will continue to grow as individuals.８. しかし、岩手の若い諸君はこういう動きにチャレンジして岩手県だけに留まらず、海外に出て色々な経験を積んでまた岩手県に、日本に帰って日本の発展に寄与してほしいと思います。新渡戸稲造さんも「われ太平洋のかけ橋とならん」として米国に飛び出し、当時の日米関係の改善に努力しました。時代は変わって、現在は21世紀に最もダイナミックに発展するアジアと日本との掛橋となる人材が必要となるでしょう。 そしてどうか、個人的な栄誉のみにとらわれず、社会に貢献できる人になる事を目指し進んで行って下さい。９. 最後に結語として 若い諸君に特に申し上げたいのは次の３点です。① グローバル化時代に生きる人材たれ 現在グローバル化はやや頓挫したような形となっていますが、形は変わってもグローバル化の流れは変わらないと考えられます。したがって若い諸君は内向き思考にならず、若い時はできれば世界のどこでもよいから、日本を飛び出して学んでほしいと思っています。② そのためには、日本語のみならず国際公共財とも言うべき英語は勿論のこと、隣国の中国や韓国の言葉も学んでほしいと思います。③ 私の経験では人生を生き抜くには、“運・鈍・根”が必要だと思います。一度や二度失敗しても諦めない根気で必要です。かく言う私も失敗したことがありますが、諦めずに頑張ってよかったと思うことが多々ありました。人生には色々予期せぬことが起こりますが、あまり神経質にならず、ある程度の鈍重さも必要です。国際連合などでは先進国を含めアフリカ、中南米、共産圏の考え方が異なった193カ国の人々と交わって話し合うには、あまり神経質でいわゆる線の細い秀才タイプの人では務まりません。そして彼らのかかえる悩みや苦悩を忍耐強く聞いてあげ、理解してあげることが必要です。私の知るかぎり岩手県を含め東北地方の人々は派手ではないが、忍耐強く粘り強いところがあると思います。このような人達こそ国際連合やアフリカ、中南米などの開発途上国の勤務に適していると思います。 このような観点からグローバル人材の育成をめざす盛岡中央高等学校のますますの発展と若い生徒諸君のご成長とご活躍を期待しています。EXCELSIOR vol.2168
