This year, we held the 21st CHUO International Education Forum. Forum week started on Monday morning, August 26, in the gym of Morioka Chuo High School, where all of the teachers and students of Morioka Chuo Junior and Senior High School held an event to welcome the 80 teachers and students from our sister schools overseas who came to Morioka.I am extremely happy to once again see old friends – including Ms. Olga Shevchenko from International Linguistic School in Vladivostok Russia, Mr. Edward Gavin from Davidson High School in Sydney, and Mr. An Jang Gung - the oldest participant (94 years old) – from South Korea. Thanks to everyone’s presence, we have had over 1,000 guests over the rst 20 years of the forum, and the total increased to over 1,100 guests with the 21st forum. This is a great honor, for which I am thankful.I think that all the student participants in this year’s forum had lively and meaningful discussions with each other as they worked together in groups and conducted eld work. I believe that this is true both of the students from our sister schools overseas and of those from Okinawa Shogaku High School. I imagine that the students also enjoyed experiencing facets of Japanese culture such as the tea ceremony and trying on kimonos, as well as participating in the “wanko soba” noodle-eating competition. A student from Okinawa ate an incredible 207 bowls of buckwheat noodles – the highest number ever at the forum. I hope that all the student participants at the forum will have a meaningful time here.I hope that the students here will feel that this forum is a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” for them. The idea of something being a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” comes from the Japanese tea ceremony, and people in Japan have talked about it for over 400 years. This phrase means that we should value encounters like the ones at this forum because they are very special. Please treasure the people who you met at this forum. All countries and regions have their own unique history and culture.
